Note: The Rann Utsav is scheduled from 23-Oct-2025 to 04-Mar-2026. Once upon a time long long ago the light emitted from Moon was the only source of light in this region. Experiencing the white desert at night used to be special. But, currently, there are hundreds of Giant floodlights installed in the entire area which makes the moonlight barely noticeable. These lights are similar to cricket stadium lights during night matches. Now you can plan for any date without worrying about the Moon.

Things to Carry

What to Pack for Your Rann of Kutch Trip

  • Clothing: The desert has extreme temperatures. It’s pleasant and sunny during the day, but nights can get quite cold (dropping to around 15°C). The best approach is to pack layers: T-shirts for the day and a warm jacket or fleece for the evenings and early mornings.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as we will be exploring Bhuj on foot and walking on the salt desert.
  • Identity Proof: An original government-issued ID card is mandatory for permits and check-ins.
  • Sun Protection: The sun can be harsh in the desert. Bring a cap or scarf, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Cash: While there are ATMs in Bhuj, it's a good idea to carry some cash for shopping at local markets and for any personal expenses.
  • A Good Bag: A backpack or haversack is easier to manage than a suitcase, especially when moving between locations.

Personal Items:

  • Any specific medicines you require. We have a first-aid kit, but it’s best to carry your own personal medication.
  • A power bank is highly recommended to keep your phone charged.
  • Basic toiletries, as the accommodation is comfortable but simple.

What is the average cost of Rann Utsav packages from Mumbai?

Package prices start at ₹5,000. Even the basic package includes stay, all meals, local travel, sight seeing, activities, and a cultural experience. You also get options for add-on and upgrades as per your preference.

Why do I need to book so far in advance?

Simply put, the trains to Bhuj get completely sold out months in advance, especially during the festival season. Booking at least 60 days ahead is the only reliable way to secure a confirmed train ticket. Late bookings almost always result in RAC or waitlisted tickets, which are not guaranteed.

I’ve paid for the tour. Is my booking confirmed?

No, your booking is not confirmed until you submit the mandatory KYC form, which we will send you on WhatsApp. This is a crucial step for safety and compliance. We cannot take any participant on the tour without having their complete and authentic details. Failure to submit the form within 24 hours can lead to your booking being invalidated without a refund.

What is the train ticket booking process?

Once you've paid and submitted your KYC details, we forward that information to a ticketing agent who books the tickets on your behalf. The status of your ticket (Confirmed, RAC, or Waiting List) depends entirely on how early you book. We facilitate the process, but the final allocation is controlled by Indian Railways.

Can I make a partial payment to book my slot?

At the fairground near the White Rann, you'll find handicraft stalls, food vendors, and a stage for folk music and dance performances. Our tour ensures you get to spend an evening here to soak in the atmosphere. Mischief Treks plays vital role of ensuring proper coordination and arrangements for its participants.

What is the best time to visit the Rann of Kutch?

The festival runs from October to March, but we recommend visiting between November and February. The weather is the most pleasant during these months—the daytime is sunny and comfortable for sightseeing, and the nights are cool and crisp. December and January are peak season, with the most activity.

I’ve heard about the full moon being special at the White Rann. Should I plan my trip around it?

This is a very common question. In the past, before the area became a major tourist destination, the full moon was the only source of light, and it made the salt desert glow. It was a magical sight. However, since 2017, the main festival area has been fitted with large floodlights. These lights are very bright, similar to what you'd see in a stadium, and they overpower the moonlight. Our honest advice: Don't stress about planning your trip around the full moon. The view is spectacular on any clear night now, thanks to the lights.

Can tourists visit the White Rann even if they are not attending the Rann Utsav festival?

Yes. You can visit the Rann any time in season. The festival adds cultural events, but the salt desert itself is always the main attraction.

How many days are enough for a proper Rann of Kutch trip?

From Bhuj-to-Bhuj a plan for one-night and two days is good to experience Rann Utsav at Rann of Kutch. A two night and three days plan works well if you wish to cover Bhuj, Dholavira and Rann of Kutch.

What are the festival dates for Rann Utsav every year?

The festival usually runs from late October to early March. The exact dates change every year. For 2025-2026 the festival dates are from October 23, 2025, to March 04, 2026

As the water evaporates, it leaves behind a massive crust of sparkling white salt, creating the surreal and otherworldly landscape that the Rann Utsav is famous for.

Rann Utsav - Full Moon Dates for 2025-2026

Prior to 2017, Full Moon used to be special day to witness Rann Of Kutch because the moonlight falling on white desert would make it look magnificent. But the Great Rann of Kutch can now be visited on any date as the significance of the Full Moon glory has become irrelevant due to Floodlights replacing the moon's glow. Since 2017 the place got commercialized and hundreds of huge Flood-lights (Halogen Lights) were installed at Rann of Kutch Desert area. The lights made Moon and Moonlight completely irrelevant. Now you can opt for visiting on any date without considering Full-Moon. These lights offer a consistent and breath taking experience throughout the festive season.

Brief history of Rann of Kutch:

Thousands of years ago, this area that today we know as Rann of Kutch was a flat land covered with shallow water of Arabian sea. Centuries passed by and due to shift in tectonic plates in earth the entire land got an uplift. Today this area covers 27,454 square km (10,600 sq mi) and it fills up with rain water which gets connected to Gulf of Kutch and Gulf of Cambay causing salty water to mix with the water in Rann. In winters the water levels go down and the left over salt forms a thick layer covering entire Rann of Kutch. This vast salt desert is not only famous for its white salty surface but also houses the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, home to the rare Indian wild ass species. This region comprises of the an area commonly called "Little Rann Of Kutch - Wild Ass Sanctuary" and a bird sanctuary where migratory birds like Flamingo are often seen. Located in mud flats of Rann is Flamingo city which is near to buried city Dholavira of Harappan civilization. The Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary spreads across the Little Rann and is famous for conserving the rare Indian wild ass.
